Today, floor drains aren't used much because of modern cleaning methods and condensate pumps. Drains used today are for condensate waste from air conditioners, draining down piping or for emergency reasons. Two major problems have developed; drains lose their trap seal because of long periods between use and waste water backs up because of overused drainage systems.rnThis is also true for drains in buildings or rooms that go for long periods without the plumbing being activated, such as schools, vacation homes, etc.rnThe primary solution, in the plumbing code, is the trap primer. The most commonly used trap primer is the pressure drop type, activated by a drop in the inline pressure when a plumbing fixture is used.
