Road to compliance for clean-water pumps

In a 2015 retrofit at a New York City high-rise, constant-speed pumps were replaced with high-efficiency pumps with variable-speed drives for the building's chiller system. The advanced hydraulics of the new pumps alone resulted in an immediate and sizable energy reduction over the old pumps. This real-world example points to the impact that is expected when the Department of Energy (DOE) standards for pump efficiency go into effect in 2020, and an estimated 25 percent of the least efficient pumps are retired or redesigned to meet the new standards.
