For the past 17 years, I've had a sinking feeling that continues to sit low in my gut. I am very concerned about the plumbing, heating and radiant industries and other skilled trades. The men and women that built this nation, those from the "Builder" generation, have retired and left the industry. The "Boomers" have taken up the reigns but now are starting to retire. The problem is that very few of the "Gen Xers" are taking over for these great leaders. Some of the family-run contractors and even manufactures are starting to lose their descendants to high-profile, high-paying jobs that they trained for in college. It is a noble goal to send your child to college. But it can be just as smart to look into the trades. "Millen-nials" are muddling their way through college and then waiting around for a "good" job.
