Since the turn of the century, St Paul's Cathedral has been largely obscured from the London public, cloaked in scaffolding and protective sheeting. Sir Christopher Wren's most famous legacy has been undergoing a £40m restoration project, encompassing both the interior and exterior. An army of historic building specialists have been scouring the cathedral, built from 70,000t of Portland stone, replacing broken and eroded masonry and restoring old leadwork, glass and gilding.
