The cost of Crossrail contracts will not be slashed despite the prediction of sharp falls in construction prices. Crossrail head of procurement Steve Rowsell said he would resist the temptation to alter the £16bn project's procurement strategy despite price deflation. He said: "We believe a two-stage approach, where you look at contractors" capability before moving into a commercial assessment, will still be important. It would be a backward step to focus on price as the driver. "It would be wrong to view this as a return to lowest price bidding and a chance to drive down costs to a position where they are unsustainable. "Unsustainable costs will come back and hit you in terms of lower quality or in terms of disputes and claims."
