Unions Target Civil Engineering Growth

Union leaders are drawing-up plans to focus the economy on five new growth areas including civil engineering. TUC policy analysts are working on the proposals with the Centre for Economic and Business Research. The move comes in the wake of the current banking crisis. It is designed to encourage the government to lessen the economy's reliance on the finance sector. The union plan has initially highlighted 31 sectors that have exceeded the all-industry average. These will then be narrowed down to five core areas, which the TUC will ask the government to encourage via initiatives like increased training. Alongside civil engineering, the other growth sectors are telecoms, film and video, technical testing and research and development in natural sciences.
