Beyond Boundaries: Dutilleux's Foreign Leavening

Dutilleux's music is inevitably considered within a French context and is frequently programmed alongside Debussy and Ravel; indeed, he is a direct link to this tradition, having met Ravel in the 1930s. Yet, Dutilleux is suspicious about always being described as a quintessentially French composer and likes to borrow André Gide's expression of ‘foreign leavening’—le levain de l'étranger—to emphasise the importance of non-French influences in his music, these having provided the catalyst for compositional self-questioning that ultimately forged his own creative identity. This essay investigates the sources of Dutilleux's ‘foreign leavening’, which he has identified to include composers from Central and Eastern Europe, notably Bartók, Berg, Schoenberg and Lutosławski.
