There is good and bad news about direct-digital-control (DDC) interoperability. The good news is that there are two open protocols to choose from: BACnet and LonWorks. These protocols are already freeing DDC manufacturers from developing individual communications technologies, thereby allowing them to focus on their core business—temperature controls. On the other hand, open communications alone does not provide interoperability. Isn't interoperability what engineers are really after?
