Engineers are currently facing a challenging environment. As we're witnessing, a confluence of trends is seemingly pulling authority away from today's engineering disciplines: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls and even fire safety. What we're experiencing is nothing less than an erosion of knowledge, and a cheapening of much of our built environment. Specifiers of every stripe know what I mean. Yet, the consuming public and the business world are often unaware of what contributes to the buildings they use every day, structures that are often uncomfortable, uninspiring, ineffective and, too often, unsafe.
