Pioneers are proactive people. Just ask the folks at Rebsamen Medical Center, Inc., in Jacksonville, Ark. The 113-bed acute-care facility is the first hospital in Arkansas to extend beyond current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 110 standby power requirements and voluntarily install an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). "Power in central Arkansas can be unstable," explains Ed Meharg, director of engineering for Rebsamen. "We experience numerous power failures, from a fraction of a second to several hours. Even a short power glitch can wreak havoc on our sensitive diagnostic medical equipment."
