Applying PUE metrics to data centers

Among data center owners and operators, there is growing motivation to improve the efficiency of their data centers. Driving up the infrastructure efficiency means less of their operational budgets are spent paying electric bills (see Figure 1). To better understand data center energy efficiency, a metric known as power usage effectiveness (PUE) can be calculated. Quite simply, PUE is total facility energy divided by IT equipment energy as shown in the following equation.
