Walk a Day in My Shoes may sound like a line from an old country song, but it's actually the name of a motivational program whose format encourages architects and contractors to "trade" spaces, headaches, and triumphs. American Institute of Architects President Thompson Penney and AGC President John F. "Jack" Kelley III, PE, CPC helped conceive Walk a Day in My Shoes as an initiative to enable both organizations' members to glean empathy and insight by witnessing the inner workings of each other's work environment. The National AIA-AGC Joint Committee formalized details of the plan in January. Penney feels that members of the building construction industry can maximize productivity by understanding that they are not alone in separate cocoons of their respective trades. The "each person for himself attitude only leads to blunders, costly blunders resulting in counterproductive contention.
