A Place of Refuge A new center for abused children in New York will help hundreds of kids a year

No one likes to think about children being abused, but for youngsters in Suffolk County, N.Y., a new child advocacy center-built by E.W. Howell Co., Plainview, N.Y.-provides a safe place to share their stories and get help. "Everyone came together to get it done," says Paul O'Rourke, executive vice president of E.W. Howell, an AGC of New York State LLC member, which received a 2011 AGC in the Community Award for the project. The 7,000-sq-ft, single-story, steel-stud-frame structure features a concrete basement; a playroom; an observation room; a medical exam room, complete with photo-documentation equipment and privacy glazing on the windows; an energy-efficient heating and cooling system; and a 10-kw photovoltaic system. It will serve approximately 300 children a year.
