At $86 million, the expansion and upgrade of the Northside Wastewater Treatment Plan is the most expensive capital project ever undertaken by the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County, North Carolina. As a project that will allow continued growth throughout the county and will be the source of a safer discharge to sensitive waters, it's also one of the most important. New Hanover County is the second smallest and second most densely populated county in North Carolina. Staggering population growth has severely taxed the two wastewater treatment facilities that serve the area.
