Brick Veneer 101-Demystifying a standard and a code

The answers to many design, construction, and resolution issues specific to brick veneer are rooted in two documents: 1) ASTM International C 216, Standard Specification for Facing Brick (Solid Masonry Units Made from Clay or Shale) and 2) Chapter 6, "Veneers," of Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530-05/ASCE 5-05/TMS 402-05). The capabilities of brick veneer are far more clear when these documents are well-understood.
