Balconies & Fagades

This article illustrates the risks of failing to properly design or construct projecting balconies, and the walls and fenestration assemblies rising above them, to resist water exposure. It presents various examples of buildings in which structural and interior wall damage have occured due to water infiltration. This author presents steps to help eliminate these risks by improved planning of the building facade and balcony configuration and by providing concepts for reliable flashings and drainage.
