Specifying Floor Finshes

Building owners, designers, and residents/tenants are increasingly using exposed polished concrete floors for a variety of interior spaces because of its pleasing aesthetics. A polished concrete topping slab can be used to also encase embedded hydronic heating systems. In isolation, specifying a non-structural polished concrete topping slab is seemingly straightforward, until thickness limitations, performance with the underlying elevated structural slab, and desire for a joint- and crack-free surface place increased emphasis on proper design and specification. Recent experience in designing and specifying polished concrete topping slabs with embedded hydronic heating resulted in modifications to the underlying elevated structural slab, careful consideration of the preparation of the substrate and installation of embedded items, and adjustments to materials and construction procedures to meet projects requirements.
