Output in public non-housing peaked in 2004 and the sector endured significant falls between 2005 and 2007. However, at a time when many construction sectors are facing sharp falls, the sector recovered in 2008 and an array of projects and programmes in health and education look set to propel the sector beyond 2004's peak, assisted by spending on the Olympics and spending brought forward from 2010/11 in the Pre-budget Report. However, medium term prospects for the sector appear poor with the end of Olympics work coinciding with anticipated cuts in funding as the government attempts to reduce its record borrowing levels after the next General Election.
