After fluctuating growth in the commercial sector during the early part of the decade, the sector enjoyed 5 years of consecutive output growth, although the rate of growth slowed to 2% in 2008. The economic slowdown has had a major impact on new orders for commercial, especially for the offices and retail sub-sectors, which were the main drivers behind the growth in the last few years. Major office projects have been cancelled, delayed or are experiencing difficulties in obtaining funding whilst demand for retail construction is being affected by changes in consumer prospects and the economy.
