Jet Dryer Blows Away Weather Delays

Turbine exhaust warms and dries base for paving in the cold and damp. Track dryers have been used for years on the racing circuit to clear debris and dry pavement after a rain, and now a manufacturer is making the aircraft-turbine blow dryers available to contractors. "We always wished we had something that would let us dry off after a rain, or to help raise the surface temperature to enable us to break the tack if the tem-perature was close to the dew point," says Mike Shilling, president of Shilling Construction. The Manhattan, Kan.-based paving contractor bought a trailer-mounted jet engine from The Akron Turbine Group last August. "This pavement heater lets us do what used to be impossible: get back to work in questionable feather conditions."
