Utility companies have enjoyed this economic cycle as much or more than any equipment-using group in North America. Business conditions steadily improved each year until peaking in 1997, a near-perfect year for the vocation. The industry's forecast for 1998 called for a repeat of 1997, but the year fell a little short of expectations and dropped one plotting point from a year ago. It was a very good year, but a slight step down from 1997.
