A new, all-steel barge has been engineered and built by Grasan for use with clamshell dredges. The barge is designed to withstand exceptionally rough loading of boulders weighing up to several thousand pounds. A barge that was custom designed for a sand and gravel operation had to cater for oversize rocks up to 36inches (915mm) in diameter plunging down onto it from a steep chute. The barge is 35 feet (10.7m) long, weighs about 38.5US tons (35tonnes) and has a load capacity of about 26.5US tons (24tonnes). The deck is constructed of heavily reinforced plate. When full, the barge is pushed ashore by an outboard motor-powered vessel and unloaded with an excavator. Other barge sizes are also available.
