Except for the 533-horsepower 24M, Cat motor grader models use a direct-drive, powershift, countershaft transmission with "full electronic pressure control," "controlled-throttle shifting," and over-speed protection to ensure, says Caterpillar, smooth range and directional shifts, and optimized inching-pedal modulation. The 24M's planetary powershift combines these features with a lock-up torque converter. All models use load-sensing hydraulics, locking differential that disengages automatically in turns, and a shim-less moldboard-retention system.
