Gene Freuder and the Roots of Constraint Computation

It hardly seems possible that it's nearly 40 years since I first shared an office with Gene Freuder at the MIT AI Lab. It's especially difficult to believe since—if I close my eyes—talking with Gene today seems very much like it did back then: very long sentences, softly spoken, sometimes fading off to near intelligibility (though always properly formed!), but most importantly crammed with original and insightful ideas. What Gene has had to say—then and now—has made a difference in many lives, mine included.
