Following mounting evidence of slowing economic activity, the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) reduced borrowing costs for the first time since August 2005. Interest rates, which were raised three times earlier in the year, were cut by 25 basis points to 5.5% at the MPC's December 5-6 policy meeting.
