In the face of a worryingly weak first quarter, economic activity began Q2 on a relatively upbeat note. Following declines of 0.3% (m-o-m) and 0.2% in February and March, respectively, April saw a 0.4% jump in GDP growth. The economy was buoyed by a 1.9% (m-o-m) rebound in manufacturing activity which accounted foraround two-thirds of the entire GDP outturn during that month. Strikes at a major US automaker saw production shifted across the border which lifted Canadian auto output by an impressive 7.0% (m-o-m).
