Following a depressing spate of data releases in July, August proved to be more upbeat. Output-based GDP rebounded from July's 0.1% (m-o-m) fall to advance by 0.3% in the following month, thanks to a broad-based pick-up in both the goods-producing and service industries. A 1.5% monthly surge in oil and gas extraction - coupled with a 0.5% increase in manufacturing following a decline of the same magnitude in July - led the way, as did gains in wholesale trade and construction. Elsewhere, August factory sales registered a 2.0% turnaround (m-o-m) after June's 0.2% fall and July's 1.1% decline. New manufacturing orders were even more upbeat, soaring by 5.3% over July's 4.2% collapse.
