January Data Primarily Downbeat The second preliminary release of Q4 GDP data showed that the economy contracted by 0.6% (y-o-y), pulling full year growth up to -0.7% from a previous estimate of -0.9%. The current account surplus fell significantly in the same quarter, pushing the annual figure down to ¥9.6tn from ¥17.2tn in 2010, which can be attributed in part to increased spending on reconstruction following last year's disastrous tsunami.
