The economy outperformed most others in Europe in Q1 by posting a positive GDP figure (+0.1% q-o-q), as the government refrained from enforcing a full-scale lockdown. Still, this approach is not expected to avert high economic costs; the unemployment rate rose to 7.9% in April (from 7.2% in March) and the 2020 GDP consensus (-5.8%) indicates a sharp deterioration weighed down by weaker consumer spending and global export demand. Denmark and Norway have extended temporary border controls with Sweden - citing its Covid-19 strategy and comparatively higher death toll - in a blow to the tourist sector.
