Worries about an escalation in the US-Sino trade conflict receded somewhat at the start of July, after President Trump pledged at the G20 summit to hold off on new tariff hikes against imports from China. He also relaxed a ban on US companies selling hardware or services to Huawei - the Chinese telecommunications behemoth - taking some immediate heat off global tech supply chains. Agreement to restart dialogue between leaders of these two major countries has dialled down trade risks. Yet a lack of detail on how differences on critical issues like intellectual property protection might be resolved means that the standoff is not quite over. Most panellists remain sceptical about material progress in negotiations that would break down trade barriers (tariffs remain in place for US$250bn of Chinese merchandise imports) and add momentum to the global economy.
