Although short message service is not necessarily a new phenomenon in the U.S. wireless market, some carriers recently have been approaching SMS as if it were. Perhaps this stems from a need to shift their marketing tactics or target audience. Or it could be just an attempt to emulate what has happened with SMS in Europe and Asia. Whatever the reason for the recent hype, some industry observers do not believe that SMS in the U.S. will be able to mirror that offered overseas.
