While carriers want next generation optical networks to deliver premium, packet-based services, many feel handcuffed by their significant investments in Sonet equipment and the lack of access to the capital necessary to overhaul their networks. Appian Communications this week is announcing the general availability of its Optical Services Activation Platform (OSAP), a metro edge solution that lets service providers offer Ethernet services over existing Sonet/SDH infrastructures. Unveiled a year ago, the OSAP recently gained NEBS level 3 certification, making it ideal for incumbent carriers migrating from circuit-switched technology to packet-based services, according to Karen Barton, Appian's vice president of marketing.
