At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Actiontec announced plans to start shipping a new Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) gateway in the second half of the year. That prompted Amedia Networks to announce its own plans to ship a similar product (essentially its existing very high-bit-rate-digital-subscriber-line gateway, fitted with GPON interfaces) this summer.
