Electrical pitting will continue to be one of the major causes for premature bearing, motor and gearbox failures. However, the identification and clarificationof electrical of electrical pitting spur gear wear has not been thoroughly investigated until now. A major challenge has been the ability to diagnose thecausation at an early failure stage. Therefore, the specific purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a detailed and systematic study for diagnosingspur gear electrical erosion utilization of wear products, specifically, wear particles found in used oil samples from electrical pitting spur gear wear tester.Typical characteristics or morphologies of electrical pitting gear worn surfaces and wear particles were observed. In addition, the electrical pitting gear wearregimes, which corresponded to the respective physical responses, such as; bulk oil temperature, weight losses of tested gears, and the morphology of weardebris were anticipated. Thus, from the experiments undertaken, three different wear regimes were revealed. These were dependent on the test parameters.Each stage produced wear particles, which were supported the belief that morphology had taken place at each stage.
