One of the main messages from the Egan report Rethinking Construction(1) was the need for the industry to improve quality through the avoidance of defects: with off-site manufacturers having benefited greatly from this due to their advantage of working under more controlled conditions than are prevalent on the average building site. However, prefabrication does demand its own special strategies - particularly in relation to waterproofing - to avoid problems with installation and during the working life of the structure.
