Ever more complicated architectural demands and the desire for more slender structures require the design of new, more efficient, building materials. These building materials include ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) - a milestone in the development of concrete building materials that is characterized mainly by its very high compressive strength, impermeable microstructure and very good durability properties. This creates the basic requirements for a material-saving, weight-reducing and slender method of concrete construction that opens up completely new possibilities for the implementation of complex architectural and dimensioning specifications. Until now UHPC has been used mainly abroad and so far there have been few pilot projects in Germany. UHPC was used for the first time in Germany in summer 2018 for renewal of the superstructure of a railway bridge over the Dürnbach, which is described in this article.
