Rhenus Alpina, the Swiss logistics and Rhine terminal operator headquartered in Basle, is poised to more than double its container-handling capacity in the Rhine river port, and to extend its logistics activities, as well as planning to introduce new shuttle train services. Rhenus Alpina already operates trimodal terminal facilities on Sudquai-Gelaende (South Quay) in Basle's Hafen 2 (the port actually consists of two river harbours, Hafen 1 and Hafen 2) interconnecting the barge, rail and road modes. These are 15 years old, and were developed in partnership with the transport operator Natural van Dam. The facilities are also platforms for a range of logistics services. These include container stuffing, stripping, repair and storage, and road and rail transport to and from other regions of Switzerland to connect with barge arrivals and sailings. The Sudquai terminal facilities presently handle about 45,000 container moves per annum. Another activity is the participation of Alpina Container Line - part of the Rhenus Alpina package of service offerings - in the Penta Container Service, which operates a barge schedule linking Basle with Rotterdam and Antwerp, with calls at Strasbourg, and other Rhine ports. Volumes carried on the service have continued to rise with reassuring regularity.
