Despite rising newbuild costs and industry concerns over the supply/demand curve after the end of 2005, shipowners still have a healthy thirst for ordering new tonnage. Thirty-four container vessels were ordered during June 2004. In terms of slot capacity, this represents 86,028 TEU. Interestingly, no new contracts were received for the super-post-panamax types in excess of 7,000TEU - for the first month since May 2003. As of July 1, 2004, the total number of vessels on order of 7,000TEU and above stands at 132, with delivery due over the next four years. The world order book for containerships now exceeds 820 ships with a combined capacity 3,182,569 TEU. These vessels are due for completion between July 2004 and December 2008, representing a remarkable 46.5% of the cellular fleet currently in service.
