Best of both worlds

With India continuing to enjoy double-digit growth in its exports and imports, the intermodal operator Container Corporation of India (Concor) is expanding its operations fast, to keep up with this demand. For the first time in its 16-year history, this now includes providing services outside India, a radical departure from its traditional activities. With the port of Jawaharlal Nehru and Concor's ICD in Delhi (Tughlakabad) now congested, the company is increasing its network substantially. This includes the 2004 opening of a new 1 million TEU capacity facility in Dadri, 35km west of the Indian capital. It also includes Concor's recent diversification into cold chain logistics services. Being a monopoly provider of intermodal container services by rail in India, Concor's buoyant growth is not surprising. The network expansion has aided this growth, through the increased ICD capacity and improved links between Delhi and some Indian ports, notably Chennai.
