Cape Town Ups Capacity With Cranes

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has placed a large order for rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) with Finland based Kalmar Industries for its opera-tion in Cape Town,South Africa. The investment comprises part of the company's USD540 million upgrade and expansion plan for the terminal, a key part of which is a complete switch to an RTG operation from a mixed straddle/RTG system. It will help raise the terminal's throughput capacity to 1.4 million TEU by 2012, up from 750,000TEU currently.
