Southern California Ups Fuel Initiative

Ocean carriers will benefit from an expansion of the initiative at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to reduce toxic emissions,through the use of low-sulphur fuel in vessels' engines. As detailed in 'US fuel drive to help carriers', CTMay 2008, p36, effective July 1, 2008, the two ports' authorities have given shipping lines financial incentives to use low-sulphur fuel, which is more costly than bunkers, between 20 and 40 nautical miles from the coast.
