APM Terminals (APMT) is phasing in additional container-handling equipment at its Apapa Container Terminal (ACT) in Nigeria. It seeks to build on the substantial improvement in productivity achieved since it won the operating concession in 2006. 'Vessel calls have grown by 30%,' said Michael Lund Hansen, managing director of APMT Apapa. 'Another notable trend has been the increase in 'gearless' liner vessels calling at the port, this demonstrating new confidence in port operations, gantry crane performance and overall schedule reliability. 'Our improved productivity has enabled container vessel waiting times to be eliminated, resulting in shipping lines ending congestion surcharges and in the process saving the Nigerian economy USD200 million a year.'
