Chinese ports recorded a much slower rate of growth in their container throughputs in the first four months of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007. The country's ports handled a total of 39.7 million TEU between January and end-April, an increase of 17.4% compared to last year (see table). This was significantly slower than the 24.3% experienced year-on-year between 2006 and 2007. While there are no actual statistics at the moment, it is widely believed that while export growth rate from China is declining, the rate of import growth is increasing.
