New Orleans' work starts

With the opening of the new Napoleon Intermodal Rail Yard, enabling on-dock ship-to-rail transfers, the US Gulf Port of New Orleans (LA) has set in motion its short- and long-term USD1 billion growth plan. The goal of the port author-ity's '2020 Master Plan', announced in March 2008, is to capture new container and breakbulk cargo at New Orleans. The port's container throughput increased by 43% between 2006 and 2007, reaching 315.375TEU, and the design capacity of its current container facilities is 366,000TEU annually. Short-term projects also include the addition of a third and fourth berth, raising capacity of the facility by almost 200,000TEU by 2012.
