China's two largest liner shipping companies, COSCON and China Shipping Container Lines, are among the world's heavyweights, together controlling well over 600,000TEU of shipboard slots and carrying more than 14 million TEU of containerised cargo a year. John Fossey reports on their continued expansion. Both COSCON and China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) are household names in the global liner shipping industry, respectively occupying sixth and eighth positions in the league of operators on the basis of slots deployed. Meanwhile each company has a significant orders backlog. While COSCON is scheduled to take delivery of 65 vessels aggregating over 595,000TEU over the next five years, CSCL is expected to phase into service 23 ships with a combined slots count of just under 170,000TEU. However, this backlog spans only two years, with plenty of time for the carrier to place orders for 2012 and 2013 delivery.
