HK shippers fume at charge

The Hong Kong Shippers Council (HKSC) is calling for a new HKD10 (USD1.29) fee per delivery or collection of an empty container levied by the Hong Kong Container Depot and Repair Association's depots to be abolished. The council is asking shipping lines to denounce the fee, which was launched on April 1. Sunny Ho, executive director, HKSC, told CI: 'They cannot justify it. They say they are introducing this charge to provide speedier services, but this is an excuse. Shippers already pay terminal handling and documentation charges and these should cover the movement of empty containers [even in outside depots].'
