Jeddah sets sights on double capacity

The Saudi Arabian port of Jed-dah's throughput capacity is likely to double over the next 18 months. This will be due to completion of a third container-handling facility and expansion and upgrade programmes to the port's existing North and South container terminals. 'Containers handled at Jeddah have practically doubled in the past five years, up to about 3.2 million TEU in 2007 and while the port works well there are some delays at peak seasons,' said Akil Gulamhussein, shipping manager of Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co, the agent for NYK Line in Saudi Arabia.
