Russia has been a hot spot for ocean carriers over the past five years, and looks set to continue being so for some time to come. There are two main reasons. The first is continuing high cargo growth, which has been attracting ocean carriers like bees to honey, and the second is the changing complexity of getting any cargo there. As shown in table 1, growth through Russian ports alone last year averaged a remarkable 26.5%, reaching 2.7 million TEU. According to Russia's largest container terminal operator, National Container Company (NCC), this brought the total through all Russian gateways, including foreign ports, to 3 million TEU, representing an average growth rate of 25% per annum since 2002.
