Port Louis - A mixed performance

The container throughput performance at Port Louis has been erratic over the past five years, although since 2005 growth has been relatively strong, particularly in the transhipment sector (see table 1). Any relationship between local imports/exports and the island's GDP growth rate has, however, been difficult to find. For example, the local cargo growth rate in 2003 was 10.8%, with GDP up only 3.8%, whereas in 2005 this was other way around with imports/exports falling by 9.4%.
