Sri Lanka needs additional logistics capacity on all fronts, but especially in the war-stricken areas,' said Saliya 'Senanayake, chairman of the Sri Lanka council of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and international vice president of this 90-year-old organisation.rn'As a global organisation which has been active in Sri Lanka for over 45 years, we can support the new 'Nation Building' programmes of the Government in this post-conflict era.'rnHe elaborated: 'The country is at a crucial point and it will take a large input [effort and money] to get to the next level. While infrastructure development in the north and east is moving at a faster pace, the ports in these regions (Trincomalee and Kankasanthu-rai) need major overhauls to support such developments.rn'Also, we cannot forget the prospects associated with the emerging port at Ham-bantota in the south. But road/rail connections are a must if this potential and 'logistics hub' position for Colombo is to be realised. A regional airports programme may also be needed.'
